Irv Gotti, Influential Music Producer and Murder Inc. Founder, Dies at 54

Irv Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. on June 26, 1970, in New York City, was a transformative figure in the hip-hop and R&B music scenes. He co-founded Murder Inc. Records in 1998, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings, and played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous artists. Gotti’s influence extended beyond music production; he was also a television producer, known for creating the BET series “Tales.”

Throughout his career, Gotti collaborated with a roster of prominent artists, including Jay-Z, DMX, Ja Rule, Ashanti, and Jennifer Lopez. His production style, characterized by a seamless blend of hip-hop beats and R&B melodies, led to chart-topping hits such as “Always on Time” by Ja Rule featuring Ashanti, and Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Real” remix.

In early 2024, Gotti suffered a minor stroke attributed to his long-standing battle with diabetes, which prompted him to adopt healthier lifestyle changes. Despite these efforts, he faced ongoing health challenges. On February 5, 2025, Gotti passed away in New York City at the age of 54. The exact cause of his death has not been publicly disclosed.

Gotti’s legacy in the music industry is profound. He was instrumental in popularizing the R&B/rap hybrid sound that dominated the early 2000s, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. His contributions continue to influence artists and producers, cementing his status as a visionary in the world of music.
